India and Sri Lanka play their last match for some time to come tomorrow at the Premdasa Stadium in Colombo. The two teams have been at loggerheads since the Asia cup six weeks ago. Since then, Sri Lanka have won the Asia cup and the test series 2-1. However they lost the ODI series 3-1 with one match to spare.

Sri Lanka will like to give the same team another chance at redemption as they would not want to lose 4-1 at home. Thus they are expected to be at full strength and take it as preparation for the ODI tri-series they will play in South Africa, also featuring Pakistan. Vaas, who took his 400th ODI wicket in the last match, might be rested.

India will want to go in for the kill, though they will also want to give some players a chance. Pragyan Ojha, Irfan Pathan, RP Singh and Parthiv Patel might get a look in as Dhoni would like to rest some players and himself to after some good work in the previous matches.

Details OF 3rd ODI India Vs Srilanka On Feb 3rd
How wide is the gulf between victory and defeat in a one-sided ODI? Today, that distance was determined by the difference in the quality of bowling by India and Sri Lanka in the Powerplay overs.
To say Sri Lanka's bowling was poor would be understating it. That Yuvraj hit 82 runs on the leg side is one indication of how wayward their lines were. Another is Farveez Maharoof leaking 68 runs in seven overs while almost consistently targeting the pads; so too Dilhara Fernando's problems with the front-foot no-ball. The argument that the batsmen did not allow the bowlers to settle into rhythm simply doesn't hold given the lines adopted by Sri Lanka's attack.
Yuvraj indulged himself so much in an erratic attack that he did not have to impose himself against his nemesis Ajantha Mendis, off whom he took 12 runs in 14 deliveries. The tactical battle had already been won.
Mahela Jayawardene admitted as much. "I am disappointed with the bowling," he said. "When they [India] put us under the pressure, the bowlers couldn't adjust. In the Powerplays, we had set fields but we didn't bowl the right lines. It's something we have talked about but we have not done it. And that has let us down today."
Sri Lanka took the bowling Powerplay in the 12th over and conceded 50 runs in five overs. Maharoof overpitched and strayed on to the pads with fine-leg in the circle. As a result, four out of the seven boundaries Yuvraj took off him came in that region. Dilhara Fernando, the other bowler used during the Powerplay, was guilty of the same mistake and conceded two out of his three fours at fine leg.
The bowling Powerplay ended after the 16th over but India decided to increase momentum by taking the batting Powerplay immediately. When Jayawardene brought on Muttiah Muralitharan and Mendis, Virender Sehwag stepped in to attack them. He put away two short deliveries from Mendis with panache, and lapped Murali around the corner before lofting him inside out to the cover boundary. India scored 43 runs off their Powerplay and progressed to 167 for 2, virtually killing the contest right there.
The performance of India's bowlers during the Powerplays of Sri Lanka's innings provided stark contrast. They were undeniably under less pressure, defending a total of 363, but the lines bowled were far superior.
Although Sri Lanka managed to score 39 off India's bowling Powerplay, the difference lay in the risks they were forced to take, the manner in which they had to earn their runs. Jayawardene played two flamboyant but risky flicks against Ishant Sharma, hitting the ball from outside off over midwicket, and once exposed his stumps to make room and hit the ball over extra cover. Kumar Sangakkara had to charge Zaheer to hit him for a boundary. India simpy didn't need to take such risks while they batted.
Sri Lanka were 95 for 2 after 15 overs when they gambled by taking the batting Powerplay. It was a tricky decision to make for Mahela Jayawardene because both Kumar Sangakkara and he were well set. Do you keep those five overs towards the business end of a chase? Or do you give your set batsmen five more overs of fielding restrictions to exploit?
"Well the required run-rate was so high we decided to take it," Mahela explained later. "Yes the spinners might have come on but the wicket was beginning to get slow and turn. If we had lost wickets, the batting Powerplay might have been wasted. So we thought, since we were going well, let's take it."
Praveen Kumar rose to the challenge by bowling a series of slower ones, mixing his pace and length, while Zaheer Khan focused on hitting the blockhole. As the asking rate approached eight in the 19th over, Jayawardene jumped out of his crease, trying to hit Praveen inside out, but holed out instead. It was one risk too many. Sri Lanka scored only 26 in that Powerplay and the task proved too much for Sangakkara.
Gary Kirsten had said earlier that this Indian team could win even if they played at 60% efficiency. That may be a debatable statement but there's no doubt that Sri Lanka cannot win if they play at 60%. They need to step up.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni's team would then get the chance to go to the top of the rankings before long if all results against the Lankans go their way and they make a winning start to their series against New Zealand early in March.

But if India lose 0-5 to the Lankans they would slip below New Zealand (113) into fifth position. Such a result would catapult Sri Lanka (107) to third spot.

Irrespective of India vs Sri Lanka result, South Africa will go to top of the table if they win the fifth and final match of the ongoing series against Australia in Perth on Friday.

Victory for the Proteas in that match would put them level with Australia on 125 ratings points. However, South Africa would be just ahead of their hosts by a fraction of a ratings point (124.85 points compared to Australia's 124.64). India will retain their third place in that case.

The Big Picture

The presence of Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag should further bolster India's strong batting line-up © AFP

India begin a short limited-overs series in Sri Lanka after success in both forms of the game over the last six months. They beat England 5-0 in November 2008 and had earlier notched up an impressive 3-2 series win in Sri Lanka - and they have a much stronger side this time, with Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar both fit.

India were pretty clueless against the spin wizardry of Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis in the Test series last year, but tackled them well in the limited-overs contest. So well, in fact, that Murali's four wickets in four matches at 43 apiece were his worst series figures at home since India toured Sri Lanka in 1997 (among series with a minimum of three ODIs). On paper, the equilibrium tilts India's way considering their consistency in the last six months.

Sri Lanka have won six of their last seven ODI series but have not been as convincing. The batting struggled against Zimbabwe and they lost a match to Bangladesh recently, and that will be a worry even though the side is boosted by emphatic back-to-back wins over Pakistan last week. There is another worry: They have traditionally frightened opponents at home but defeats to Pakistan, England and India have opened up cracks. Mahela Jayawardene will be keen to dismiss those as bugs in an otherwise remarkable record in Sri Lanka. Making the early running in a series compressed to 17 days will be essential.

Watch out for ...

Nuwan Kulasekara had a fantastic 2008 in ODI cricket, and his start to this year hasn't been too shabby. In six matches in 2009, he has taken 12 wickets at 13.33. With Chaminda Vaas cutting down his workload, Kulasekara has become Sri Lanka's premier quick bowler in this format. His numbers over the past year - 45 wickets at 18.86 - and his success against India in their last series - 11 wickets at 14.45 - make Kulasekara a serious threat.

When India toured Sri Lanka last, Mahendra Singh Dhoni didn't have it easy. With Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar absent and the top order struggling, Dhoni and Suresh Raina were left with plenty to do. He had it easier in India's last ODI series, against England at home, when the batsmen fired but this promises to be a sterner test. Knowing Dhoni's competitive nature, he will want to stamp his mark with the bat again.

The aura over Ajantha Mendis, who recently became the quickest bowler to 50 ODI wickets, diminished somewhat when Pakistan's batsmen handled him efficiently. Mendis picked up four wickets at 20.00 in three games without being as threatening as he was in the Asia Cup. On the favourable home pitches, though, Mendis will always be a factor.

Sachin Tendulkar has never faced Mendis in an ODI. Injury ruled him out of the last contest in Sri Lanka but his return reinforces India's top order. He averages 41.81 over the past 12 months and 42.00 in Sri Lanka. How he handles an in-form pace attack could prove a key component of this series.

Team news

Sri Lanka's selectors have retained, for the first three ODIs, the 15-man squad that beat Pakistan 2-1. Tillakaratne Dilshan's promotion to opener in Pakistan worked stupendously - he scored 255 runs, including an unbeaten 137 in the decider - and he is likely to continue in that role. Sri Lanka's batting has struggled in recent games against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe but against Pakistan they put up good numbers, bar Jayawardene. Thilina Kandamby's inclusion in place of Jehan Mubarak worked wonders and he and Chamara Kapugedera will bolster the middle order. The bowlers pretty much pick themselves given their successes recently.

Sri Lanka (probable) 1 Sanath Jayasuriya, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 5 Thilina Kandamby, 6 Chamara Kapugedera, 7 Thilan Thushara, 8 Farveez Maharoof, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Muttiah Muralitharan, 11 Ajantha Mendis

India are certain to go in with the three fast bowlers who did well in Dambulla last year - Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma and Munaf Patel - and possibly a fourth. In that case, it will be a toss-up between Pragyan Ojha and Praveen Kumar. Ojha will be given opportunities in this series with Harbhajan Singh, the frontline spinner, injured. Sehwag and Tendulkar will open, while a red-hot Yuvraj Singh will drop down to No. 4. Yuvraj has struggled against spin in Sri Lanka but India will hope his recent success rubs off against Murali and Mendis. Suresh Raina is likely to get the nod ahead of Rohit Sharma.

India (probable) 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Sachin Tendulkar, 3 Gautam Gambhir, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Suresh Raina/Rohit Sharma, 6 Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt/wk), 7 Yusuf Pathan, 8 Praveen Kumar/Pragyan Ojha, 9 Zaheer Khan, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Munaf Patel.

Pitch & conditions
The captains expect a seaming pitch, which explains India's strategy to play as many as four seamers. The weather is likely to be clear as well, and the team winning the toss might want to put the opposition in.

Stats & Trivia

* Sri Lanka have won 14 out of 20 ODIs at the Rangiri Dambulla Stadium

* India have won three out of seven matches here, but have only won one of five games against Sri Lanka.

* Dambulla has traditionally been a low-scoring venue: in 32 ODI innings since 2004, only seven times has a team scored at a run-rate of five or more.

* Murali has a bowling average of 14.21 and an economy rate of 3.33 runs per over at this ground, with 32 wickets from 14 ODIs.

* Murali, who has taken 500 wickets, need three to go past Wasim Akram, the highest wicket-taker in ODIs. Sixty-nine of those have come against India at an average of 29.39.

* Sanath Jayasuriya's record in Dambulla isn't as impressive - an average of 24.26, with just one half-century in 17 innings.

* Since 2007, spin has fared slightly better in Dambulla. The slow bowlers have taken 54 wickets here at an average of 19.65 and an economy rate of 3.64. The fast bowlers have taken the same number of wickets at 22.14 and an economy rate of 3.99.

Quotes
"I'd like to get more runs and contribute more to the team's totals. This is something I have been working really hard on. I hope I get it right against the Indians."
Mahela Jayawardene is determined to reverse his indifferent batting form

"We did not know what was coming out of his hand and how much variations he had. But when you play constantly against the same bowler, tackling him becomes easier. This time, we will start on an even platform against him."
Gautam Gambhir, who made 36 runs in four ODIs in Sri Lanka last year, feels India are better prepared this time to counter Mendis

Nimbus bags TV rights for Sri Lanka-India series

January 22, 2009

Source - Bollycric.com

Singapore-based Nimbus Sport International has won the rights to broadcast the five one-day internationals and one Twenty20 match between Sri Lanka and India starting next week in Dambulla.

Sri Lanka Cricket's invitation for bids for the series closed on January 19 and the floor price expected for this hurriedly arranged series was US$10 million. But it is learnt that Nimbus is paying them a much smaller figure than the one anticipated. Sri Lanka's Daily Mirror reported the television company paid the board US$6 million for the series. Nimbus Sport will exclusively market all commercial rights for the series.

After finalising the deal between Nimbus and SLC, Duleep Mendis, the board's chief executive, said they were impressed with the qualitative and commercial offering that Nimbus Sport brought to the table. "Nimbus Sport shares our passion for the growth of the game of cricket and, having worked closely with all Asian cricket boards, we are confident about partnering with them."

Nimbus Sports executive vice-president Yannick Colaco hoped the partnership with the Sri Lankan board marked the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship. "As a sports marketing and production company, it has always been our aim to provide quality sports and cricketing action to the subcontinent and to the cricket fan worldwide."

Sri Lanka and India will play five ODIs between January 28 and February 8, followed by a Twenty20 international on February 10.

Economic downturn takes its toll

Sri Lanka Cricket faces sponsor crisis

January 19, 2009

Source - Bollycric.com

Sri Lanka's cash-strapped board is facing more problems after sports minister Gamini Lokuge admitted that sponsors were deserting cricket as a result of the global downturn.

"The global economic crunch and the economic slowdown in Sri Lanka has had an impact on companies coming forward to sponsor our national team," Lokuge said. "It's a shame. We have a full calendar of games this year."

Dilmah, who had been national team sponsors for the last three years, declined to renew when their contract expired, and there has been a lack of interest in replacing them. Sri Lanka's biggest mobile operator Dialog Telekom signed an US$89,000 deal to sponsor the side on a three-month trial basis, with a spokesman saying that there was an option to extend the deal "if the business climate improves and our team performs well in the upcoming tours".

The forthcoming tour by India will help the board. Clothing manufacturers MAS Holdings will continue its sponsorship until the end of March in a deal worth almost US$300,000, while SLC seeks broadcast rights for the series.

'Positive' Jadeja geared up for India role

January 18, 2009

Source - Bollycric.com

Ravindra Jadeja: "I am confident I can score those 50-60 runs in the middle order and play my hand with the ball with a few quick wickets in the middle overs" © Cricinfo Ltd

It was Rajasthan Royals' second game in the IPL, against Kings XI Punjab. Under pressure, having lost their opening encounter in Delhi, they were 99 for 4 chasing 167 when Ravindra Jadeja walked in. Shane Watson had gained the upper hand over the bowlers, but needed someone to stay at the other end. With Shane Warne to follow, Rajasthan couldn't afford to lose wickets. Jadeja was up to the task, dealing with Brett Lee and Co in a mature manner.

That game, according to Jadeja, allowed him to set his sights high. Having to tackle the likes of Lee, Sreesanth, Irfan Pathan and James Hopes, the young allrounder from Saurashtra walked in with only one aim: not to return before he could finish off the game. His unbeaten 36 came in a valuable 69-run partnership with Watson, and marked the start of Rajasthan's march to the championship.

"That was my first big game, facing an all-out international attack but I enjoyed it every bit. Hitting two boundaries off a Lee over was an enjoyable experience," Jadeja said, over the phone from his native Jamnagar, after hearing the news of his selection in India's squad to Sri Lanka for five ODIs and one Twenty20 international.

"After such a good Ranji season I hoped my name would be in the reckoning," Jadeja said. He was easily the best allrounder in the tournament: Jadeja's 42 wickets made him the joint leading wicket-taker alongside Mumbai's Dhawal Kulkarni and he finished sixth on the run-charts, with 739 at 67.18.

A month before the IPL, Jadeja had played his hand in another triumph, taking two wickets in the Under-19 World Cup final against South Africa. Things have changed a lot for Jadeja, who had struggled in the previous Ranji Trophy season, with only 195 runs and nine wickets in his six games.

Speaking to the likes of Dav Whatmore and Pravin Amre helped him immensely. "The big change was in my batting, where I focused on playing along the ground rather than going for the big hits, which I used to do last year. Whatmore, who was the coach for India Under-19 and then for India A, pointed out that my back-swing was coming from the outside so if I could straighten it I could add more power to my strokes."

Amre, who was the coach at the NCA as well as the India A team that played in the Emerging Players Tournament in Australia, told him that his back foot needed to go across and not side-on if he needed to be in the right position while hitting his shots. "That has played a big role in my success this year as I got a high amount of my runs from the back-foot shots," Jadeja said.

Cheteshwar Pujara, Saurashtra's top-run getter and third overall in the Ranji Trophy this season, feels Jadeja has grown more patient and that has allowed him to prosper. Pujara said Jadeja's strong point was his cheerful attitude in any situation. "He is always enthusiastic. He brings in a lot of energy," Pujara said of his team-mate, with whom he had added an unbroken stand of 520, the highest in a first-class match in India.

When Jadeja enters the ground, he needs to dominate. "I like to keep my attitude positive always. If there is a situation where the team needs me I like to dominate and finish things off and leave nothing for the next man. I tell myself it is me who needs to perform and not someone else."

That positive attitude played a huge role in Saurashtra making it to their second straight Ranji Trophy semi-final this season. Saurashtra had been in a close battle with Delhi to enter the knockout stage. In the game against Delhi at home, the visitors were hunting for a win and had the upper hand when Saurashtra were reduced to 83 for 4, with two key batsmen, Shitanshu Kotak and Pujara, dismissed. But that didn't deter Jadeja, who pieced together a stubborn 143 and was the last man out, robbing Delhi of the time needed to force a win.

In the final league game against Hyderabad, Saurashtra needed a victory to nose ahead of Delhi, but were bundled out for 133 in the first innings and struggled in the second too, finishing with 183 and setting Hyderabad 177 for victory. However, Jadeja finished off the match with seven wickets in the second innings.

With such efforts behind him, Jadeja is confident he can play the role of an allrounder in the Indian team if given an opportunity. "I look at myself as an allrounder and I am confident I can score those 50-60 runs in the middle order and play my hand with the ball and take a few quick wickets in the middle overs."

India to play five ODIs in Sri Lanka

January 13, 2009

N Srinivasan, the BCCI secretary, was in Colombo to finalise the series

India have confirmed a short series in Sri Lanka next month comprising five ODIs and one Twenty20 game and placed renewed faith in their bilateral ties, which had hit a low during the previous administration headed by Arjuna Ranatunga.

The dates for the proposed Indian tour are yet to be finalised but N Srinivasan, the BCCI secretary, told reporters in Colombo that the series will be held during the two-week window in Sri Lanka's Pakistan tour itinerary - January 28 to February 14. Duleep Mendis, Sri Lanka Cricket's (SLC) chief executive, stated that the venues will be Dambulla and Colombo. "We are in the process of finalising the venues," Mendis said. "Most probably the Colombo venues will be the R Premadasa Stadium and the SSC."

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), on their part, have committed their players to the IPL in April and assured the Indian board of its support on the ICL issue. Under Ranatunga, the Lankan board had refused to commit their players for the IPL and allowed five players associated with the unofficial ICL to take part in a domestic tournament. Ranatunga was subsequently sacked by Gamini Lokuge, the Sri Lankan sports minister, who has the final say in the country's cricket administration.

A long term agreement between SLC and the IPL is to be signed on the day of the Twenty20 match between the two countries.

"We have agreed to play five ODIs and a Twenty20 match and all pertaining matters in regard to the two governing bodies were solved," Lokuge said at the SLC headquarters in Colombo. "The SLC has agreed to release its players for the upcoming IPL tournament and we are to come to a long-term agreement concerning the Twenty20 showpiece.

"India and Sri Lanka had a good relationship when it came to cricket. Today we have strengthened that. As a result more tours will take place between the two countries in time to come. We have also come to a conclusion to stand by the BCCI stance with regard to the ICL.

"We've also decided to support India at the ICC meetings. The (country's) president himself has given his blessings and we are happy that things have worked out in a positive way."

Srinivasan expressed his pleasure at the cordial welcome given by his Sri Lankan counterparts. He also expressed satisfaction at the decision taken by SLC to release its players for the IPL starting in April, and for firmly standing by the BCCI with regard to the ICL issue.

"BCCI as always will be committed to support SLC in the future," Srinivasan said. "The exact dates and venues are yet to be finalised and probably we will be able to release the tour plan and the duration by tomorrow (Wednesday) to the press."

Srinivasan denied the BCCI had any role to play in Ranatunga's ousting. "We have no right to interfere into any matters of SLC. They are sovereign like us, the BCCI. The BCCI has never expressed its concerns over the way SLC has been ruled in the past. We are very sorry for the impression that has been created."

Sri Lanka are due to play three ODIs in Pakistan in the first leg of their tour and resume the second leg for two Tests after the India series.
